About Frenchcreek Township

Rich in History

Named for French Creek, which forms its northern boundaries, Frenchcreek Township was established around 1806 and modified at different times as other bordering townships were formed. Frenchcreek Township is located in Venango County, Pennsylvania.

George Washington went up French Creek in 1753 on his trek to the French commandant at Le Boeuf and, therefore, became one of the first Americans to travel this part of Venango County.

John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, started orchards along Frenchcreek on property that he settled upon about 1798. After 1804, he moved on to Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and other areas of the Midwest, planting fruit trees (mostly apple trees) for the new settlers. He finally settled in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where it is thought that he is buried.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the Frenchcreek Township has a total area of 29.5 square miles (76 km2), of which 29.3 square miles (76 km2) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) (0.68%) is water.

In 1880, the population was 1286, and it is 1282 today.
